Mary's Rants

It's Thursday and only a week and a half left before conference. So much to do and so little time. As much as I love to network and see old and new friends, the conference is a career opportunity, one I must use wisely.

As I mentioned last week I color code everything in the workshop outline RWA gives us. Pink for 1st choice, yellow for 2nd, etc. But how do I pick what I attend? That's the hard part. Every year my career is at a different place, so my choices reflect where that place is.

This year I honestly do not know what I want to focus on. The three themes are career, craft and publishing, what way to go is the delimma.

This next week will be spent scouring the blurbs of each workshop. Cross referencing what is on the discs I purchased from D.C. last year. What's the newest trend, and what workshop are new and haven't been presented before.

Once I have a list of everything that interests me and that I do not have on disc from a previous year, then I'll start to narrow it down. That is when I will know what my focus will be. Every year it is a challenge for me to wring the most our of the conference to make it worth all the dollars I've spent.

And every year I bank on that one workshop that will tell me the golden advice that will take me to the top.

For those who are going to Nationals this year, what will be your focus?

Mary: I've already chosen my workshops and prioritized them. When I looked over my list, I saw craft, craft, craft.

I've decided to rethink that and get a little more balance in there.

So, is there a way to buy the audio on individual workshops from 2009? I've only seen the RWA offering of the whole thing on CD's for around $129.00.

Mary, great food for thought. In past years, I have concentrated on the Spotlights and the workshops that offered insight into how to elevate my writing to make it stand out. This year, I will concentrate on the marketing ones. When you've been going to these as long as I have, there are only a handful of new craft workshops, but every now and then an excellent one pops up.

Hope you added Kari and Christine's workshop about when Hollywood comes calling.

See you guys there.

Awww, thanks for the plug, Liz. I'm still working out the details for that workshop, while planning what ones I want to go to myself. And I am moderating 3 other workshops as well. Eeek.

I am getting really excited, though. I LOVE conferences for the networking alone. Everything else is bonus. I will probably go to workshops on marketing, publicity, the state of the industry, foreign rights, etc.

And I always love editor spotlights just to see if they have any inside insight. Though we all know our rocking agent Christine keeps up with that and it truly changes daily.

For anyone going to the coference, don't be shy....say HI!!!

Debbie there is a way to download the workshops. They are $8 each https://rwa.billspro.com/catalog/
They have 2008 and 2009 available. They are well worth it.

Also, when I checked to make sure this was the right link for you, I realized there is more than just craft, career and publishing. There is writers life, chats, research and of course the spotlights. So many more to organize!

Liz, I've never gone to an editor spotlight. I probably should, I rely to much on what their web site says.

Kari, you're going to be great in your workshop!

I am going to moderating one maybe two workshops. I had volunteered to do more, but they've only contacted me about one. We shall see.

Can't wait!

Which workshop at National to take is a hard decision, so is trying to decide which conference to attend. Right now there are two conferences in October that I'd like to attend but can only do one. They both offer great workshops which makes the choice even harder.
