As we taxied to the terminal, we could see lightening close by and it was pouring down rain. I smiled to myself thinking I was one of the lucky ones who wouldn’t be stuck waiting for the storm to pass.
Wrong, Kimosabe! Apparently, airports now worry a little about their crew people on the ground. Imagine that!! They closed the airport and wouldn’t let anybody go near the runway. I sat in the terminal for over an hour and a half waiting on my luggage, thinking a little lightning through a baggage-handler's body wasn’t that big of a deal when I had places to be and people to see!
I finally got to the hotel and was able to register without a hitch since everyone else was already there with the exception of the poor souls still circling the airport.
Wednesday night was spent meeting people and the Literacy signing. I met some of the Book Cents Babes (Clients of Christine Witthohn) including the one voted “most easily to hate”. I say that because the woman took ONE craft class, wrote one frickin’ book, won her first contest, got an agent, finaled in the Golden Heart and sold a three-book series in a matter of six weeks. (Waving at Rochelle) Unfortunately, after getting to know her, I still hate her …..not. Who could hate anyone who shuns all carbs like they were full of Ebola, then downs a humongous plate of French Fries?
Anyway, everyone was still in "be on your best behavior” mode, so there was no real drama that night.
Thursday, I went to a few workshops (The Grammar Divas were the bomb! I’m going to try to get them to guest blog sometimes soon.) That night, we met Doug McKeon, the Hollywood screen writer and producer who was a part of the workshop with Christine Witthohn and our own Kari Townsend titled, "Selling to NY and Catching Hollywood’s Eye.” I was expecting a man who was all caught up in his successes and was pleasantly surprised to find one who could have been my neighbor at a BBQ with me. He was so genuine and down to earth, my next goal is to write something he might be interested in (like Kari did.)
Have I mentioned he does a mean shooter, too? After the BC dinner, we discovered the Japanese Karaoke bar in the basement of the hotel!!
Yep, you heard me right. Sushi and Karaoke. The Book Cents Babes, complete with a few friends and an amazing group of Canadians we met shimmied up to the bar where we did shooters to celebrate my first sale along with fellow BC Babe, Anita Clenney’s first sale. (Just for the record, Anita, affectionately hereby referred to as the wussy, didn’t do a shooter. However, in her defense, she did send her brave CP up to the bar in her place. Hey, Dana!!) Anyway, the waiter lined up nine DOUBLE tequila shots on the bar with a cup of limes and a salt shaker that would have been best used at a table full of munchkins. Have I mentioned I am a Texan??

I pulled out a big-ass shaker with Margarita salt from my purse, and we all primed the area by our thumbs. Then we slung one back and sucked on the lime. OMG!! Now it's official. I sold three books.
Kari's workshop Friday morning was fabulous, BTW.
Friday, I went to my first Berkley cocktail party and met a whole slew of wonderful Berkley authors and industry people. For the first time, I think it hit me how very lucky I am to have been at the right place with the right manuscript with the right fabulous agent pushing for me.
After the party…you guessed it… we hit the karaoke bar again. After one margarita (it was a sissy one) Kari, Danielle Bronson and I did a rousing rendition of “Proud Mary” complete with me pulling up my pants leg and hopping across the stage in true Tina Turner fashion. (What I wouldn’t give for her gams!!) Kari. Danielle and Barbie Jo Witek continued to sing a few more and really made me proud!! Sending a shout out to all my new Canuck friends who were there again on Friday …Corrine, Lucy and all the others. I discovered writers are a lot of fun when you get them away from their everyday lives. They metamorph into their characters, some even imagining they are Tina Turner!!
We closed down the bar at 2 am.
Saturday was the Awards dinner and we all cleaned up rather nicely. Congrats to all the finalists out there whether you won or not. It was huge that you actually got to sit at those front tables and see your faces on the same big screen as Nora Roberts'. I applaud each and every one of you.
When it was over, we decided we would go to the karaoke bar for an hour or so. Are you seeing a pattern here? There was a group of us and we picked up more on the way. (A shout out to the Utah and/or Alaska girls I met with Tiffanie) After a few more drinks, all of us (yes I said all, even Christine) went up on stage and sang our hearts out to Captain and Tennille’s “Love Will Keep Us Together.” We even had a young man who wanted desperately to be part of our group (or any female group for that matter) come up on stage with us to wiggle his hips. There was one grandma in the crowd who thought she needed to show him how dirty dancing was really done – not mentioning any names, but I am still sore!!
And again we closed down the bar.
Anyway, long story short, Nationals was a blast this year, and if I ever consider giving up my membership in RWA again, somebody slap me. Next year, we are getting shirts dedicated to our shooter nights to celebrate YOUR (insert name here)sale. It will say LICK...DRINK...SUCK on the front and PUKE on the back! (There was no actual upchucking in Orlando.)
And that was my 2010 RWA conference. To everyone who couldn’t make it, we missed you. I will post pictures later. I had so much fun meeting all the BC Babes (Tiffanie, Michelle, Kari, Barbie, Rochelle, Anita, Danielle (who jumped into the fountain in true FRIENDS fashion), Gail, Leigh, and Yahrah) my fellow M & M pal, Mary Martinez, my DARA friends, my GIAM friends, new friends, Regina and Dana, my CP Joni who is now a BC Babe ……………..Yippee, and all my friends in RWA including the new ones I met this conference.
Do you notice a definite lack of workshop attendance here????????????

Hey Liz,
Thank you for sharing such a blast! I'm still smiling. This blog post should be used for "ticket sales for next year"... I was thinking NY was just a little too much city for me and 2012 in San Diego would be a better goal... NOT.
Can't wait to meet you guys in NY. Hey, As a Cannuck and wannabe BC Babe I almost fit! (we won't mention that I'm alergic to alcohol because I can fake the buzz in good company)
again, thanks for sharing.
ps. ms sat for 3 days to get me some distance, final run through this week.
There were workshops? Just kidding. Great blog Liz. I felt like I relived it all over again. You guys had a great time.
Now I'm definitely glad I stayed home. You ladies are dangerous in public.
Oh Liz!!!!! You had me cracking up all over again. I can't tell you how many times I fell asleep on my family (in the middle of conversation) once I got home. Oh, and if I volunteer to moderate 4 workshops again next year...slap ME! (2 would be sufficient). Although networking with the kareoke machine was fascinating! And I have the blackmail video of your Tina Turner moves, baby!!!
You summed it up! And I'm loving the T-shirts for next year. And I think all the prio "shoot-ees" should sign the backs! What a riot! And watch out Big Apple, the BC Babes will rock the house!
Katt, you should have been there and definitely consider NY next year. We loved your compatriots from Montreal, too.
Keeping my fingers crossed that you join the BC Babes, too. Work on it.
Mary, as I mentioned, it was so great meeting you for the first time. You are as lovely in person as you are on this blog.
Lindsay, I'm thinking you would have been right up on stage with us and you know it!!

Lindsay, I'm thinking you would have been right up on stage with us and you know it!!
Barbie, you really do have a video of me with my pants legs up? Okay, I promise to get you published if you give it up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously, we did have a blast. And I almost forgot to mention how the newest BC Babe, my CP Joni (pronounced Johnny) Sauer-Folger got up on stage by herself and sang "New York State of Mind." And nobody booed!! If she wasn't writing fabulous books, I know what other carrier she could pursue.
Liz,
Why do you think I'm glad I wasn't there?
Barb-how much for the video?
OMG that video also has me chasing Liz around the damn stage and swaying in a dress that makes me look pregnant....trust me, I was told exactly! The dress became a running joke the whole conference, and it's getting burned this week!!
I seriously had more fun than anyone has a right to. And Barb I don't care if you post the video...it really was funny as hell.
Tomorrow I will post with pics of the conference.
Whahahahah I want to go back!!!
Okay I missed the Video, I want to see it. Kari I do not remember you in anything that made you look pregnant.
Liz, that was a very nice thing to say. I was very excited to meet you and Kari and I had a great breakfast!
Kari, you really didn't look pregnant although I, too, am curious when the "wee one" is coming!!!!!! We gave her so much grief over that. I once had a dress I thought I looked hot in and burned it for the same reason.
As far as the video, I've seen the one picture of me in the bar, so the video couldn't be any worse.
I want video not pcx
Hey Liz,I enjoyed your blog and our one night in the karaoke bar together. That sounds so naughty. I thought it best not to go to sleep after the bar and stayed up to catch the 5:10 transport to the airport. I did change out of the gown, they're tough to travel in, and untaped my boobs. Now there's a litte too much info for ya, and put on my wongie waistbands. Needless to say, I only recently came out of my coma. Damn kids kept jumping on the bed wanting food. Anyway, the conference was great, but closing the bar down on Saturday night made me feel like I did the conference in style. Thanks for the memories.
I am SO thrilled you guys had such a good time. But, I'm still suffering from "need to cancel" syndrome. How great is it to truly enjoy the same folks you work with?? Hugs, Cassy
Hey, Boone, welcome to M & M. Boone is one of my new Alaska friends and fellow karaoke divas. Sorry about having to rip the tape from your boobs---ouch---and the kids who think eating is necessary.
My only advise to you is to not wait until the last day to join us. We know how to rock a party.
Come back to see us here.
Cassy, I can't tell you how much we missed you and your smile. I understand your reasons for canceling, but it doesn't lessen my disappointment you weren't there. We could have made you forget your real life, at least for four days.
Hang in there, my friend and know you were truly missed.
Cassy we so missed you! And Mary we so wanted to party with you! Next year! And OMG wish I could have stayed for the untaping of Boone's boobs! Snort. She sounds just like one of us :-)
I'm still in a coma and wayyy behind schedule! Ugh. Reality sucks.
Liz,
I expect, repeat expect, you to behave in November
Guys, or Babes I should say, I'm all over November. No way am I missing another get-together. Even though it won't be the same without the full gang.
Katt: It sounds like you are making great headway. GOOD FOR YOU!
Lindsay, behave! Or, you'll discover that when the BC Babes band together, there is no breaking us apart.
Barbie Jo- A video? I think you might have a money-making opportunity!
Seriously, folks, thanks for letting me know you missed me--that means a lot.
Cassy,
Why should I behave
The BC Babes don't scare me
My mother out drank me? Role reversal for sure! Glad you had fun! You deserved to celebrate your success!
Liz, I'm so sorry I didn't get to meet you, which I still don't understand how that happened because I spent 2.2 percent in my room.
I know, I must have been in the workshops!
So glad you had a marvelous time networking with your first sale.
Tis as it should be
Oh my! My baby has found me at the blog. I'll have to watch what I say now....NOT!!!
And Nicole, you know what a big talker I am. Most of what I recounted here was on ice water with lemon. With the exception of the shooter night, this all happened on one drink a night - Lipperman style. You gotta watch those lemons. They'll sneak up on you.
Hey, sweetie, keep coming back and commenting. I love it and you.
Donnell, I wish we had connected. I would have loved to have met your daughter and son. How sweet that they came to support you.
Send me your notes from the workshops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And your shooter days are coming very soon. Back atcha with "tis the
way it should be."
Good thing I'm a good boy and don't have to worry about shooters, whatever the heck they are
Soooo jealous.
Guess I'm in for next year in NY, but it won't have the same sparkle or getaway, what happens in Orlando, stays in Orlando feel. (It's local!) No escape, no vacation. No theme parks. Oh. Wait. What am I sayin'? NYC isa theme park!
If the BC Babes are already planning for NY next year, well then, I guess I'm . . .
Lindsay, I can't believe you don't know what shooters are. Here it is step by step. You lick the area down from your thumb, then put salt there. Next you throw back a shot (or in our case a double shot) of tequila, then hurry up and squeeze the lime into your mouth. It's an old Texas tradition.
And I can't believe you said you weren't afraid of the BC girls. Ladies, does that sound like a challenge to you?
Taryn (love that name, BTW) we missed you, too. And don't worry about playing in your own backyard next year. We didn't even leave the hotel!!
Come join us either as a new Babe or an Associate Babe. It works either way.
Hey, where are all the Cannucks? They were supposed to check out this blog. See, they used me for a cheap thrill and now, they throw me down like a dirty rag.
And you're suppose to scare me. Why would I be scared of the BC Babes?
I don't do tequila. What about a nice Bordeaux instead. Kentucky sipping whiskey would work also but that's a mans drink
Thanks for sharing, Liz. Sounds like I missed a great party. On Thursday evening - probably a little earlier than when you were sucking up shooters in the karaoke bar - I toasted you all with a $19 shooter at Rosa Mexicano. Yes, I said $19, but it was Cuervo Familia Reserva, and worth every penny! Hope to see y'all here in my (adopted) home town next year!
And I, for one, am looking forward to seeing those pictures.
Liz --
Thanks! Both for the BCBabe (whatever category!)invite and the name thing. To me it sounds pretty fake, but apparently one of my REAL LIFE pals was able to remember that, but not my REAL name when chatting with a Carina editor. Dazed by RWA#10, she says!
Lindsay -- Dunno why, but I thought you were in FL doing shots with the M&M ladies!
Not me Taryn. I was home where it was safe
Oh dear Lord, Mary, I forgot I was supposed to call you at the precise moment we were doing shooters. It's that CRS (can't remember s***!)disease.
Glad you remembered though, and what a gal - helping us celebrate with a $19 shooter. And we thought $9 was bad.
Did you suck the lime after the tequila??
Terri/Taryn, your pal must really be a great friend talking you up with an editor. In my opinion, she can call me whatever she wants if she does that for me.
LOL
Liz -- And the really great thing is, I now have an RWA#10 story to tell and I wasn't even there!
Well, once again the BC Babes have made my Tuesday blog at Nights of Passion.
http://nightsofpassion.wordpress.com/
WOW thanks for sharing this Liz made me want to come join you all. It looks as though you all had a great time.
Babs, I would have loved to have met you and partied with you, too.
See you in NY next year.
