I want to welcome my friend, Dale Mayer, back for the third time. Why, you ask? Well, Dale recently became a finalist in Brava’s Writing with the Stars contest, and after two rounds of challenges and voting, she’s still in! This round of voting is on the best back cover copy and she needs your help once more. The winner gets a contract with Kensington. So, show her some M & M love and go vote at Writing
With The Stars contest.

Once again a huge thank you to Liz for the invitation to join you here today! She’s been such a wonderful supporter, I can’t thank her enough.

Seven tongue-in-cheek reasons why I’m still in the Writing with the stars contest – I think…

This is another humorous look at this six past month voyage into the world of public opinion.

Five months ago, around the 12th of July, I actually entered my ms Tuesday’s Child into the Brava Writing with the Stars contest – only a couple of days before the contest closed. Less than a month later I received that crazy phone call from Megan Records that set my calm, peaceful orderly life on its butt and things haven’t been the same since. So far there have been two rounds completed with the third round of voting in progress. There are only six finalists left and two more will go soon after the polls close on January 2nd. Things were fun when we started. It was new and different. Now that I’m still in the running, things have gotten scarier.

I care more – before it didn’t seem real and the goal too far off in the future to be really understood. We’ve been through three months of this already and I’ve struggled to come up with a reason why I’m still here!

So these seven potential reasons are my way of lightening the stress and nail biting moments that have multiplied in astronomical proportions in the five months since hitting that ‘submit’ button way back in July.
Let’s take a look!

1. People feel sorry for me because I couldn’t think up a name for my manuscript so just used the day I started the book.

2. Voters looked at my picture, realized I was blonde and needed extra help

3. Voters realized the last judge didn’t like my character descriptions so voted to help me out – if so could those voters come back and visit again, please? This judge REALLY hates my entry.

4. My voters all hate paranormal/contemporary and historical romances – that only left mine. Don’t anyone tell these voters that psychics make my entry a light paranormal too!

5. Voters played ‘we love her, we love her not’ and ended up on my name. If they played eenie meenie minie mo – they ended up below me – so obviously no one was playing that game!

6. People following me on my social networking perils have decided I need a little longer in the game to get it right – Yep that was me trying to figure out how to do anything BUT retweet on twitter!

7. The people reading the computer generated results were into a little liquid Christmas cheer and couldn’t read the results correctly – no, I have no idea who would have sent out a bottle of bubbly so early!

And there you have it. It’s so close to Christmas, I wanted to make sure you all have a smile on your face at least once today as you move through a crazy schedule of deadlines, line-ups at stores, gift wrapping and running out of tape, baking where you forgot to add the pecans to butter tarts and everything else that can go wrong!

Okay, this is me talking now. Did I mention Dale was a good friend? What a nice belated Christmas present it would be for her to sign on the dotted line. So, hop over to the website above and vote.

In the meantime, I thought it would be nice to let her know of any experiences y'all have had with contests. I'll start it off with my comment.

Hi Dale! We are in the GIAM loop together. Again--I voted!! I have never entered contests. I'm a judge in a few, but I'm not convinced chapter contests really do anything. I think the Kensington is GREAT b/c you get published!! Good luck, my fingers are crossed!

I love contests! I've had the privilege of winning several (just got the word yesterday on the latest in South Florida!)... there is no better way to survive the rejection wars than to have a contest win.
And even the non-wins, give you amazing feedback, generally from your peers, sometimes even from agents and editors.
I didn't have the cojones to step up into the Kensington Contest so big CONGRATS to you just for the entry...
It's got to feel pretty dang wonderful everytime you land on the right side of another cut.
You go girl!

I'm headed over to vote now. I spent some time with Megan Records at my local chapter retreat. I really like her. She was so open and helpful. Good luck.

I said I would post my experience and then I went and overslept. Sheesh!

Anyway, I had my fill of contests a few years back and swore I would never EVER enter another one. I would always get two judges who loved me and one who wondered why I even bothered. I found out part of the problem was that I would enter romance contests with mysteries, and it seems romance judges have a strict sense of rules that I never followed!!

Anyway, I entered the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award (ABNA)two years ago at the last minute. I'd never heard about it and had to really scramble to get all the stuff ready that they required. I was amazed when they notified me that I was a quarterfinalist. The best part about the whole thing was that they posted my first chapter on Amazon as a freebie download for about six months. All my family and friends (and anyone who wanted) could read my writing which was a really big step for me. To this day I am terrified of people reading my stuff.

Anyway, part of the prize was a critique of the full from a PW reviewer who ripped me a new one. I almost quit writing over that. Needless to say, I didn't move on to the next round.

It was that same story that actually was instrumental on my getting a three book deal at Berkley, who coincidentally was the one who publishes the winner of ABNA. The editor couldn't use that particular story but wanted something else from me. I have no idea if she Googled me and saw the Amazon stuff - there were gads of great reviews (mostly form family and friends) that popped up when you Googled my name.

One of these days, I'll ask her, but in the meantime, I've come to the conclusion that contests are not the evil devils that I thought them to be, especially when they're free.

So, I also applaud Dale for having the guts to enter and put herself out there for the judges to critique, and I encourage all of you to rush over there to help her out.

Since a lot of our faithful readers are already on vacation and hopefully doing something more fun than sitting at a computer, every little vote helps.

What are you waiting on?

Hi Dale. Once again you got my vote. Good Luck.

Katt's right. That did take a lot of gumption to enter and as far as why you're still in it - you're good!

Thanks for making me laugh, you too. Dale, congratulations. You know I'm a huge fan of your writing from way back. My vote is 100 percent yes and I hope you get that publishing contract from Kensington.

Isn't Liz fantastic for watching your back ;) Wait a minute, I see a pattern here... Both of you are blonde! Merry Christmas!

Good morning everyone! Thanks so much for letting me join you this morning.

Tonya are you in GIAM 5X? There are so many of us, we need to get better at meeting everyone on the loops. Thanks for the vote - I really appreciate it.

I went through the ups and downs of contest and seriously, I'd had it. Was going to put this ms away! It was just one of those things where I decided - one more time...and it worked out.

Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Katt. How wonderful that you just heard about a contest win! What a lovely Christmas gift. And you're right, wins or even a final are great for the flagging self-confidence.

If I'd given myself time to actually consider what entering the Brava contest would mean, I don't think I'd have entered. It's been a good experience but hard in many ways.

And you're so right - every time I make it through another round, it's like Christmas all over again!

Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Anita, I've only ever spoken with Megan over the phone and she's been a sweetheart to deal with. I'd love to have her as my editor.

Thanks for going and voting!

Very funny post, Dale.

I voted for you because I LOVED your entry...and you're blond...and you named the story after the day you decided to enter. LOL

Best of luck. I really hope this works for you. Would love to see your name on a BRAVA cover.

Hi Liz, I'd never heard the full story on your quarter final experience. Isn't it so typical that someone has to rip your work apart. The judges haven't been a terribly pleasant experience with this Brava contest, but I have to take the punches along with everything else. I have really enjoyed the comments from the readers. They've brightened my day.

I didn't care quite so much in the beginning and now it's hard not too. Not quite halfway now and with the next round things will be even harder.

Having everyone pulling together to help me out - particularly over the holiday season, has been a huge blessing. This contest has really opened my eyes to the friends I have! Thank you!

Dale Mayer said...

Thanks Lindsay - your vote means a lot!

Have a great Christmas!

Dale Mayer said...

Ahh Martie - how kind of you to say so. Now that I'm settling into the contest a little more - every round brings a new challenge but I'm not as affected by it. It becomes easier to forget about the judges comments and concentrate on the readers!

What's one opinion against so many. Lol.

Thanks for the support and stopping by today!

Dale Mayer said...

Lol - Blonde and proud of it! Of course, my sons would say, "And too stupid to know the difference."

Seriously, thank you so much for the friendship, support and loyalty - not to mention the votes! Sigh. It's so nice!

Dale

Hi Cyndi!
I would love to see my name on a Brava book! Wouldn't that be fun!

Thank you so much for all the support you've shown me as I move through this journey. It's been so much better to have friends along for the ride!

Good luck to you Dale! Great post :-)

Hi Kari - thanks for stopping by. Everyone is so busy at this time of year, it's hard to fit everything in.

Have a great holiday season!

I have to jump in and reply to
Donnell's post. Under the blond curls lies a chestnut brown/mostly gray head of hair. So, I am just discombobulated naturally!!

Merry Christmas back to you. Have a great time in Seattle.
