So earlier this week, I had an idea for a blog post. Then after reading Cassy's post yesterday - something even better came to mind.
How far will you go to get into character????
It's summer, time for vacations, and stay-cations, day trips and just plain fun. In the spirit of getting your characters "just right", have you ever visited a place where you had an opportunity to put yourself in your characters shoes, if only for a day? We have renaissance fairs (yes, I probably butchered the spelling - it's just one of those words I can never get right)that I LOVE to go to. People in cosutme re-creating a time period that is one of my favorites. (the jousting, giant turkey legs, wench dunking) Ever since I was a teen, I've wanted to go with friends and actually get in costume. Sad to say, I've never done it. Part of me still wants to - could be more fun as an adult! (Not that I'm in the process of writing a historical, but it would be fun)
I've often re-created scenes in my home (when no one else was around) to make sure what I was having the heroine do was actually logical based on the situation and how she was sitting/standing etc...
I've gone on trips where we toured caverns, and wondered how my character would behave if she were trapped underground - great experience!
And before this year is out, I will indeed host a murder mystery dinner party. I'm dying to corral suspects at my house and try to figure out who-dunnit!
so what crazy things have you done, or places have you visited in order to "get into character"?

Great post Barbie Jo. The farthest I've gone to get into character is having Austin help me act out an attack scene to see if I got the sequence right.
I love those renaissance fairs(yeah, I probably misspelled it too). I haven't been in a long time. I love the costumes and the knights jousting.
That reminds me of the place I went on vacation once, where we sat around the arena and were served food while the knights had a tournament. I loved that.
The only place I've ever gone and then took what I remember and inserted some of it into a book was DC for Target Identified. I used several locales there for scenes featuring the antagonist.
Yes, Medieval Times is fun. I've been a couple of times.
What fun to think of all the nutty stuff we could be doing. I laugh when I remember of a post a writer made a few years ago on this same topic. She wanted to see if someone could duct tape herself to a chair without any help. Well, she found out you could. But she couldn't get out of the stranglehold. So, she sat there for hours waiting for her son to come home from school. He panicked, thinking she had been attacked. It took her many minutes to calm him down and then have him cut her loose.
Guess we gotta be careful what scenes we play out!
Sorry, I'm late to the party, but I spent the entire day at a water-park with grandkids.
Anyway, I went on a cruise so that I could see what my girl would be doing in the next book. Other than that, I have nothing. I'd love to hear what everyone else does.
LOL I remember years ago when we lived across the street from each other. We used to meet and work every Sunday night. How much fun we had acting out scenes and seeing if certain things were humanly possible. And Barbie's poor husband seeing us through the window from across the street, wondering what the hell are they doing over there?
Tooooo funny. Good times :-)
