Kari's Kave: Ho Ho Hold it...How Soon is too Soon?

Ho Ho Hold the phone...or in this case the decorations!

Halloween is barely over, yet Christmas decorations are already in stores and some radio stations are already playing the music.

What happened to Thanksgiving???

It got me thinking when is too soon?

Same goes for wrapping up your mini-mysteries and revealing information that answers questions your readers are asking. You can't wait until the end of a book to tie up all your loose ends and solve your mini-mysteries. Yet you don't want to wrap up everything so soon that the story gets boring and you're filling it with fluff to make it last until the big bang of an ending.

I an faced with all of this as I am plotting out book 3 of my Fortune Teller mysteries, Trouble in the Tarot. It's a lot of fun writing a mystery, but is also a big juggling act. I am constantly asking myself if it's too soon or too late. Too much information or not enough?

But when it comes to the holidays....I definitely think it's too soon. While I love Christmas, I feel like Thanksgiving always gets the short end of the stick. It's like a kid who has a birthday on Christmas. You never make out quite the same as your siblings who have their big day on its own special day. You'll never get as many presents or all the attention and that stinks.

So here's to Thanksgiving! I refuse to put out a single decoration or do a single bit of shopping until the day after :-) That's my gift to you, Thanksgiving!

Enjoy every season and don't rush time. It will all be over with soon enough.

What are your thoughts on when to start holiday advertising and when to start solving those mini-mysteries?

Kari, I understand how you feel about the holidays getting squished together. I'm in retail, and we've been working on Christmas stuff for a while now, in order to get it ready for shoppers, so I'm already tired of the holiday season! Unfortunately it has to be done this way or it wouldn't get accomplished. :) Mentally, I've already moved on to Valentine's Day. LOL

LOL that's so funny, Donna. Moving on to Valentine's day already :-) Thanks for the grin. I'm sure it is a necessary evil, but brings on all the stress that goes with the holidays as well, and I'm just not ready for any of that yet.

Kari, again I'm late to the party. I'm also a Thanksgiving lover. I put my Christmas decorations up the weekend after TG and take them down the day after Christmas.

This year I gave away my huge tree and bought a prelit one. It was a gorgeous tree but it took so long to get it up and decorated. Life is too busy for me,now, and Pm trying to simplify.

As for writing mysteries, I hear you. It's difficult squeezing in the clues without giving it away, but when you get it right, what a felling!

I've seen Christmas decorations in some stores as early as August. And I agree with you that we should give Thanksgiving its due. Heck, Ben Franklin want the turkey as the national symbol instead of the bald eagle.
