So while summer hasn't "officially" started, it's summer for me. And I had set some deadlines for myself with which to take time and finish two more novellas for my holiday anthology. That was to start June 1st. And it DID start....I wrote 5 pages on June 1st - and I loved all 5 pages. BUT (don't you hate how there's always a BUT?)...I haven't touched it since. (insert heaving sigh)
You see, my whole grande idea was to finish tweaking and polishing my romantic suspense and self publish it. Obviously the time didn't go as planned to get it done, so THAT is what I'm still working on. (insert groan) I'm liking the additions to this story, BUT (I know...hang in there) it's taking more time than I originally thought because I'm finding more loose ends as I go along and events that don't really need to happen now that the plot has changed slightly. Oh, and did I mention while working on this, I was critiquing my CP's story AND spinning ideas for a new possible series. I agree, I am certifiably insane.
Liz may have topped me as the Queen of Granny VB, and deadline whiner, Cassy is the Queen of Travel and never ending road trips, Anita is the Queen of Interesting Tactics and Getting it done while Kari is the Queen of Outlines and Speed Writing. But "I" am the Queen project switcher!! It all started when many publishers were letting authors submit on a partial (especially if they had already read some of your work). So for about a year, I had a partial for just about everything under the sun from middlegrade to romance to mystery! But I still haven't gotten picked up by a publisher, and now because the way the market is, most want fulls from unpubbed authors like myself. And even now, while I have some stories with a couple publishers - there's all this opportunity to self pub the things I know are good, they just never found a home for one reason or another. So I start working on them. But then there's potential for another story that we could submit to a publishser, so I stop working on the current story and switch gears.
I have done this more times than I care to count - hence all of the "open" files in my computer. Stories I NEEED to finish just for my own benefit. Stories I WANT to put up either by myself or give to a publisher. But can someone tell me WHEN in the WORLD I'm supposed to do all of this writing??
School is just about over. My boys will be only going on days they have regents exams, and my daughter has another full 2 weeks. Of course, I have the day job and our nights are filled with summer sports games and practices. I've been coaching myself to get ready and become that evening writer I used to be. I'm not seeing much of a choice at this point. If I want it bad enough (and Oh, I want it BAD) then I have to return to that killer mindset of doing whatever I have to do to push these stories out whether they are being self pubbed or traditional.
And THAT is what I'm going to do. Game ON!! I'm ready and I'm setting even more deadlines for myself. Anybody else have deadlines this summer? Need a kick in the pants? Let's Go!!! Killer Barbie is on the loose!
Now, if I could just snag some DNA from my fellow M&M Queenies, I could create the perfect writer! (insert evil laugh). She would be athletic and sassy, fashionable and world renown, savy, hardworking, creative and productive! She would be a NYT Best Seller!!!!
so who's rooming with me at the next conference?? (wink, wink)
