Anita's Attic: Where Did Summer Go?

Am I the only one who feels like time is moving at warp speed while I'm moving as slowly as this snail? Not that I know what warp speed really is. But I swear, I don't know where summer went. One minute I was dreading the kids getting out of school because I have deadlines and not enough uninterrupted writing time and the next I'm sitting at football practice talking to my mom on the phone and I realize that we have ONE WEEK left of summer vacation.

For me, all summers go quickly, but this one has zoomed. I didn't get as much new writing done as I would have liked, but I did go through two rounds of developmental edits and copy edits. And I've done a lot of plotting. So when you consider that I've gotten to spend more time with the kiddos and gotten some things done, it's all good.

But come next week, I've got to put my head down and move faster. Not like Mr. Snail, who was in my driveway a few weeks ago. He (or maybe he was a she) is cute in an ugly sort of way, but if I'm going to make my deadlines, I've got to move faster.

How about you? Have you accomplished the things you wanted this summer?

Anita: I hear you and I don't even have kids at home any more. But I do have other responsibilities that seem to take over. It's amazing how many things can be a time suck. Travel has been a big one. I love it, but it takes more out of me than it used to. I'm starting to get better about saying "no" and putting my writing time in.

Cassy, at least traveling is a nice time suck. :) I wish I could travel more often. But at the end of the day, even if the drain on your time is something fun, it still leaves a void in the writing.

I had a pretty good summer. Two books published and a third, a regency romance, written.

Wow, Lindsay, you're moving a lot faster than that snail. How much time do you typically write each day?

My kiddos went back August 6th. I feel they barely get a summer. At least not like I did as a kid. I didn't even make a dent in the things I wanted to get done this summer. I did have a fabulous vacation in NC visiting my bestest friends from college! Since school has started I'm constantly on the go. My son started high school this year and is getting involved with after school activities. My daughter is also involved in Girl Scouts and 4-H. It's gonna be a busy year!

Not even close to accomplishing what I wanted. My entire July was spent marketing a new release, babysitting and vacations.

I just finally had to decided I was okay with it and move on.

You'll get it done, Anita. I know.

Amber, August 6th isn't much of a summer. At least you had a great vacation. That's important, and with friends from college. That must have been fun. My son is going into 9th grade and he's a quarterback for Junior Varsity. Wow. We're so proud of him. But it does take a lot of our time. And our daughter is still in Middle school and made the Cheerleading squad and now we have two different directions to go. Thank goodness the games are on different days!

Liz, even though you didn't get done everything you wanted, it is okay. Life is more than just writing. We have to take care of the other things too. I think I need to just plan on summer being not very productive. That way I'm not disappointed.
