This seems to be the spot where I offer confessions. One of
my somewhat private loves are orchids. I have eleven plants along my kitchen
windows. Ten of them are in full bloom. Some arch tall with a cascade of white almost
obscene blooms. One is tiny, not even a foot tall, with vibrant orange flowers
in the shape of star bursts. Another is a wonderful combination of pink, purple
and mauve. The range of colors, shapes, heights, and foliage is amazing.
I adore these beauties. They talk to me as I fuss with them.
Each has a slight individual preference for its care- a little more light, not
so much water, a stronger concentration of plant food when in bloom, time to
rest in between sending out new stalks with buds and more. They are very good at letting
me know when I have done well by them, and when I haven’t.
These magnificent plants are quite like the people in my
life. Some are stubborn and only want things to go just their way. Others seem
to flourish with simple kindness and a random hug. Yet, we all need our
sunlight, our nutrition and our time with others. We each are special, fragile but resilient. As you move through your day on this Valentine's Day, remember to tend those around you and treasure the unique qualities that stamp our individuality.

I know someone regularly gives their orchids beer - I think once a month :)
Now that's one I never heard, Ingrid. I'll have to do some research. Of course, there'd be some competition from the man of the house.
